DR. BACH’S “OVER-WHELMED ELM” FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Posted on by Gaye Mack in Balance Leave a comment

As the Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s draw near, so does the stress that comes with these celebrations…on top of the astrological buzz that I’ve mentioned in past postings…and this month is crammed, that’s for sure. However, it doesn’t really matter if you are ‘in to’ astrology…the annual return of the holiday season always comes with assorted stresses…usually it’s a matter of how intense each year is going to be and what a dichotomy it is.

If the economy is in good shape, it seems we tend to carry on, ‘over do’ with the fun things…going to and hosting social gatherings, shopping, cooking, holiday events, cards…pushing us into an over the top frenzy to the point where reality hits us with the question, “What was I thinking?”

Currently of course, the state of the economy and our country is on everyone’s mind; these are tenuous times, the future seems uncertain, especially the political climate.  Never-the-less, when Thanksgiving approaches we seem to rev up into ‘automatic pilot’ and as in previous years, despite vowing never again, we launch ourselves into the holiday fray…even though it may not be as robust as in past years.  And, although the source of our stressors (am I going to be first in line at the 4 a.m. ‘blue light special’? Will I want to kill my sister with the turkey fork at Christmas dinner?  How am I ever going to get everything done?) is probably somewhat different this year, they are part of us like clockwork and taxes.

Dr. Edward Bach’s Elm flower remedy is a fabulous tool for combating the feeling that you’ve bitten off more than you can chew and are up against the wall…I have the large economy size on my desk at all times, by the way!  While Elm is a star at holiday time, I want to mention a few things about the action of the remedy in general.

The negative Elm state is typically a ‘temporary’ state and can appear in any of us at any time.  In other words, it isn’t one of the soul types that I’ve been writing about, nor is it particularly what I would identify as a ‘personality type’, although it may seem so.  While we all can have the experience of ‘taking on too much’ for a particular reason, there are individuals who repeatedly find themselves in the negative Elm state.  So what does this look like; is it different than the occasional experience of feeling overwhelmed?

Yes and no.  On the surface it develops pretty much as the state I described that happens during the holidays…or it could be a forthcoming wedding or a ‘one-off’ important project.  But the difference is that there are individuals who are ‘prone’ to a repetitive imbalanced Elm state.  These are the people who tend to over achieve…particularly if they are perfectionists by nature.  The tendency is to take on, take on, over commit then crash and burn.  In these cases, there is a deep, on-going dynamic that drives the behavior which has an affinity to the remedy, Pine.  (for basic information on Pine, see my post of 8/19/11).

What I love about Elm is that in my experience, when we are feeling ‘overwhelmed’, a simple dose or two can swiftly shift our perspective into one where we can ‘step back’.  It fosters our ability to ‘see’ that not everything is a number one priority.  It helps us ‘see’ possibilities for prioritizing, delegating and exhaling!

COMPOUNDED BY THE ON-GOING PLANETARY BUZZ, THESE STRESS-FILLED DAYS CALL FOR DR. BACH’S HOLLY

Posted on by Gaye Mack in Balance, Karmic and Self-Discovery Astrology Leave a comment

While we’re decking the halls with holly, it goes without saying that the holidays are always stressful, no matter how much we look forward to them and want to enjoy them. Aside from Mercury going direct on Tuesday after its approximate three week retrograde, the on-going Pluto/Uranus Square and tomorrow’s Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Gemini (which is ruled by Mercury by the way), Mars has been ratcheting up its warrior energy in nit-picky Virgo since mid-November.

No question, we need Mars’ energy; when it squares the Sun as it has been doing since November 20th  it can rocket us out of a rut or…affect us negatively by acting as an impulsive hair trigger that gets us into deep water, pisses us off or just simply aggravates us about everything.  So, if you’ve been feeling the latter energy with this square, there’s help on the way.

First of all, we have just one more day of this square and then we can exhale for a bit.  However, owing to the stresses of the season, we might continue to feel aggressive and agitated.  If so, this is where Dr. Bach’s wonderful Holly flower remedy comes in.

Like all of the 38 remedies, Holly has beautiful facets to it.  Additionally, it’s a deep remedy which warrants  much longer discussion than this space allows, but I can talk about some of the indications that tell us when we’re in a negative Holly state and how the remedy can shift us.

In the broad sense, negative Holly is about aggression, jealousy, envy,  greed and rage; simply, its anger is very much in the spirit of Mars’ shadow energy.  Holly will go on the offense as a defense (think road rage, the bully on the playground, emotional and/or physical vindictiveness) because the individual’s emotional interpretation is that they’re being attacked in some way, either by an individual, circumstances or the world at large, even when there’s no indication this is the case.  You cannot miss negative Holly energy…it’s in your face, not like smoldering Willow which I’ll blog on at some point.

The irony here is that at the core, whether the state is temporary or chronic, the individual is extremely sensitive. If you’re familiar with the ‘doctrine of signatures’ so often referred to in herbal studies, you’ll see what I mean by looking at the plant’s leaves which are protected by the very prominent ‘stickers’ surrounding them.

From the remedy perspective Holly’s life force, prana, Qi, vibration,  softens the perception of being attacked; it helps us to step back and reinterpret the reality around us and at the same time supports us with a feeling of safety that promotes a willingness to open the heart center…and what could be more appropriate at this time of the year?

DR. BACH’S ‘MUSTARD’ FOR SEASONAL GLOOM

Posted on by Gaye Mack in Balance Leave a comment

If Colonel Mustard did the dastardly dead in the library with a pistol, he’s clearly not your man to help with seasonal gloom.   As I look out my office window at the December rain that’s  pouring down, I’m reminded there’s an emotional fog that can come with the onset of the winter season or suddenly appears for no reason at all.  This fog can settle over any one of us, especially for those in the more northern areas of the country.   For some, this ‘funk’ arrives like clockwork throughout the months that I call ‘the dark ages’ when sunlight takes a holiday replaced by grey days that are endless.  For others, they’re fine one moment and in the next, they feel like they’ve suddenly fallen into a black hole.  When this happens, there’s relief to be found (besides taking vitamin D), in Dr. Bach’s flower remedy Mustard.

Mustard was not one of Bach’s Twelve Healers and therefore wasn’t one of the Soul Type remedies that I’ve been writing about in previous posts.  And, it wasn’t one of the ‘Seven Helpers’ which were next in the line of discovery.  However, it is one of the final 19 remedies which Bach discovered between 1934-35.  He described these remedies as being more ‘spiritualized’, functioning at a ‘higher vibration’ than the earlier 19 and that they functioned on a ‘different plane’.

How and why these or for that matter any of Dr. Bach’s 38 remedies work, we don’t know as yet in a way that is understood by the bio-medical model.  But, at the end of the day, this isn’t really the issue.  More importantly, when there’s a resonance between a remedy’s vibrational energy, life force, prana or Qi (whatever word you want to use) and the individual, there’s a shifting of perception and mood.  With Mustard it’s as if the remedy ‘lifts’ the gloom up and out of wherever it has settled within the person’s energy fields and emotional experience.

The key to identifying a ‘Mustard state’ is that there’s no one specific event or happening that throws you into the sense that you have a black cloud hanging over you.  It can simply be that you  are routinely sensitive to the lack of sunlight or that you occasionally experience a sudden onset of feeling low-spirited.  If you happen to be someone who experiences these moments or seasons of depressive gloom, Mustard is the remedy.

For clients who often experience a negative Mustard state, I recommend making a ‘personal formula bottle’.  This will help the 20ml ‘stock bottle’ you buy in the stores go a lot further, nor will the fact that the remedy is diluted in 1 oz of water, affect its power in any way.   On my website, look at the sub-link, What if you feel you need more than one remedy?  There you will find directions for making a personal formula bottle for one or a combination of remedies.

URANUS-THE LIGHT BRINGER OF ‘LIGHTBULB MOMENTS’ FOR DR. BACH’S WATER VIOLET

Posted on by Gaye Mack in Balance, Karmic and Self-Discovery Astrology Leave a comment

As I wrote in one of my previous postings, the on-going square between Pluto and Uranus is such a big deal that I’d be revisiting these two planets from time to time, particularly to look at how the energies of these heavenly bodies can and do interact with the various energetic characteristics of Dr. Bach’s flower remedies…especially at the deepest levels of our being.  For this posting I had actually intended to write on another subject but at the last moment, suddenly changed my mind…an example of how Uranus’ energy can affect us when it’s winding up in our charts…sudden departures from normal patterns that come out of nowhere.  So to Uranus first.

Personally, I like Uranian energy…most of the time…because it can and does, bring us flashes of inspiration…light bulb moments…those ah ha!, moments.  Without looking at specific charts, it’s pretty certain that those responsible for our greatest advances in technology (which Uranus rules), either had or have strong Uranian energy in their birth charts or were undergoing a major Uranian transit when  they were suddenly inspired with ideas that depart from the norm.

When Uranian energy transits a sensitive point in our birth chart, its purpose IS to break up stagnant patterns.  Whether the intent is creative or personal life changes, it hits us like a jolt of lightning(which by the way is another thing Uranus rules), shattering us out of what might be construed as a deep sleep.  Such jolts can be uncomfortable because it’s typically intense and relentless in achieving change.  However in the larger view, a Uranus transit propels us think/act differently that’s positive for our evolution; the ease of how we navigate such a transition depends very much on how strongly we resist, which brings me to Dr. Bach’s Water Violet remedy.

Reincarnation is a core tenant of Evolutional Astrology, and thus pairs beautifully with Dr. Bach’s concept of Soul lessons and types which I wrote about in Igniting Soul Fire~ Spiritual Dimensions of the Bach Flower Remedies. The Water Violet Soul is very old in this context and therefore carries with it an enormous amount of wisdom and experience.  The karmic issue for these souls is experience, but it’s sadly won through betrayal and most assuredly, unpleasant outcomes.  With such experiences comes grief …a major hurdle to presently overcome for Water Violet because the energy of the past is entrenched in the cellular memory.

Thus  because Water Violet carries such deep grief from the past, it tends to be introverted and may appear aloof, driven by a strong reluctance to interact for fear of yet one more betrayal and yet… its karmic job IS to interact, to share its deep wisdom which will bring JOY to this soul…the virtue, according to Dr. Bach.

The power of Uranian energy is not shy as it comes upon us suddenly, deliberately pushing for change. So if Water Violet’s picture resonates with you in any way even in your personality, this remedy can be very supportive and strengthening during a Uranus transit, fostering courage to engage and receive joy in return.

TURNING RETROGRADE IN SAGITTARIUS, MERCURY DOUBLES UP ITS ENERGY MEETING DR. BACH’S CERATO HEAD-ON

Posted on by Gaye Mack in Balance, Karmic and Self-Discovery Astrology Leave a comment

If you read my last post, you’ll know there’s a LOT happening in the heavens on Thanksgiving.  Included in the coming attractions,  little  Mercury, ‘messenger of the Gods’, ‘director of all forms of communication’, will begin its final retrograde motion of 2011 as it appears to back up in its orbit until December 13th.

On the practical level as always with a Mercury retrograde, it’s wise to make certain that  computers are continually backed up,  messages are double checked  before we hit ‘send’ or ‘delete’, details of appointments are re-checked  and that we are conscious of what’s coming out of our mouths.  When Mercury turns retrograde, it tends to play havoc with all forms of communication whether they be external or simply a mind that just will not STOP…this is Mercury’s energetic MO.

As I posted last time, along with Venus and the Sun and Moon, Mercury is now in the fire sign of Sagittarius  turning retrograde just hours before the New Moon Solar Eclipse on the 24th…translation: Mercury in Sagittarius is fired up with lots of energy encouraging us to ‘let go’ of beliefs or perspectives that no longer serve or benefit our evolution…but this isn’t the whole story.

When any planet shifts into ‘retrograde’ motion, we’re encouraged to contemplate; to better understand a particular part of ourselves(mercury-the mind), a particular message of the sign that it’s in at the time, (Sagittarius-beliefs) and what alternative action needs to be taken by us, if any.  Thus, during a Mercury retrograde, Dr. Bach’s flower remedy Cerato can be very helpful

Like all of the remedies, Cerato can re-balance s temporary or situational mood state but it’s also one of Dr. Bach’s original ‘Twelve Healers’ and therefore a soul type.  While one may not be a Cerato Soul Type per se, those who have Mercury significantly placed in their chart are particularly subject to Cerato’s shadow energy which distrusts innate wisdom.  As a result, decision making can be very difficult at times; the individual has to ask everyone what they ‘should do’, rather than going within and trusting their own knowing.

During Mercury’s retrograde motion where the message is really to quiet the mind and mouth, Bach’s Cerato can act as a catalyst, shifting our perspective from the external to the internal.  So whether we are dealing with a ‘temporary’ Cerato state or if we might well be a Cerato Soul… if we are prone to distrusting our own Divine wisdom, Cerato’s energy will support us in our effort to go within where we can come to ‘know’ this wisdom that is ours and to trust it.
