Discovering Who You Are Meant to Be, Rather than the Person You Believe You Are
Within the ancient and sacred scope of astrology, evolutionary astrology has emerged in the last 40 years or so as a field of specialization placed alongside other astrological disciplines—such as financial astrology, medical astrology, and horary astrology, just to name a few. I first heard a vague reference to the evolutionary approach years ago during a reading with the well-known Chicago “astrologer to the stars” Katherine DeJersey.
Katherine had done readings for me before, but this time she was studying my birth chart and that of our infant son. I can still hear her words as she said, “Soul astrology…this isn’t a specialty of mine, but I should tell you that I’m fairly certain you and your son had at least one past life together…whether it was as lovers, parent and child, or simply sweethearts, I just don’t know; but it’s showing up in your charts and I think…I think,” she said, her voice trailing off as she tapped the charts with her finger.
Given my fascination with astrology, her words instinctively resonated. However, I never dreamed that 35 years later I’d be committed to this art as a practitioner. It wasn’t long after that formative reading that I seriously began my studies through initial courses grounded in evolutionary astrology. This was followed by a period of study with the London Faculty of Astrological Studies in the UK, and then several years of apprenticeship under the tutelage of globally prominent evolutionary astrologer Steven Forrest.
Symbols Are the Language of the Universe
So what makes evolutionary astrology different from the more traditional approaches, or even the newspaper horoscope, reminding you that as a Leo Sun, you like to wear jewelry? The key lies in the concept of our evolution as spirit in body or soul growth. Unlike traditional astrology, which is descriptive in its nature, evolutionary astrology is prescriptive. The evolutionary astrologer looks at the “chart behind the chart” in his or her analysis. The concept of karma and previous lives is predominant in this approach, but belief in such esoteric philosophy on the part of the client isn’t absolutely imperative.
Recognizing that symbols are the fundamental language of the universe, the astrologer’s goal is to help the client discover who they are meant to be—rather than who they are in comparison to others. This revelation is metaphorically determined by patterns between the symbols and planets in the client’s astrological birth chart. The past and its relationship to the individual’s present are combined with the astrologer’s counsel to suggested approaches toward transformation into personal evolution.
While it isn’t unusual for people to think that astrology is all about pre-destination, in which there’s no free will of choice, nothing could be further from the truth. We always have the power of choice, even at times when we don’t think so. I write about similar concepts in Igniting Soul Fire: Spiritual Dimensions of the Bach Flower Remedies. Evolutionally speaking, our birth chart echoes a call to action from the universe, beckoning us to jump into the abyss in order to embrace the work of manifesting our highest good in this lifetime.
